start by filling out the Instructor Training School (ITS) Application
The GVC Instructor Training School (ITS) is a three-day program that is typically offered in conjunction with a GVC BMW CCA weekend driving school at Watkins Glen. The purpose of the school is to give advanced students, who are ready to progress to the next level, an opportunity to learn about and experience instructing in a safe and supportive environment. Our program is designed to identify and train only top tier instructors. Candidates' driving skills and instructional abilities will be mentored and rated by our region’s most dedicated and accomplished instructors.
The first two days of the program consist of alternating in-car role-playing with an ITS mentor-instructor and classroom sessions. At the end of the second day, the candidate's progress is evaluated, and if ready, the candidate will begin instructing a student on Sunday; otherwise, he or she will continue to work with their mentor. The classroom session encourages open discussion so that students can share their instructing experiences with fellow classmates and learn from each other.
If you would enjoy the rewards of sharing your driving skills with others, and are ready to commit to promoting high performance driving in a positive and professional way, we welcome your application to participate in our program.
To be considered as an ITS candidate you must:
- Be an experienced driving school student driving at an advanced level for several years, or have been instructing with the BMW Club for under a year
- Be recommended by a BMW Club Chief Instructor who verifies that you are ready to begin instructing.
- Obtain recommendations from two HPDE instructors that instructed you within the last year, that say you are ready for the ITS program and confirm that you have the communication and high performance driving skills at an instructor level
- Have significant experience driving at Watkins Glen International racetrack.
If you meet these qualifications, please complete an Instructor Training School (ITS) Application
After your application has been received, you will be contacted by the ITS Chief Instructor via email and/or phone.
If you have any questions please email the: GVC ITS Chief Instructor
The HPDE Instructor Manifesto is filled with over 40 pages of tips, advice and thought-provoking ideas that I'm sure will make you an even better instructor than you are today. And if you're not an instructor yet, this will prepare you for what is one of the most rewarding and challenging activities ever.
This manual provides practical ideas to help experienced high performance drivers communicate what they know to students. It is designed to be an aid in bringing back to consciousness some of the skills and techniques that are automatic and unconscious for experienced racers and high performance drivers. It also suggests a structured approach to instruction particularly useful to new instructors. Tables and illustrations compare and contrast the performance of novice, intermediate, and advanced students to help the instructor candidate observe and diagnose problems when coaching students. A glossary of track terms is included to aid instructors to recognize jargon and to help explain terms commonly used at the track.
